The Texas-based anime convention A-Kon provided an important update on its finances and future plans on May 14. This comes more than a year after its 2024 event was canceled.
Refunds and Future Plans
- The staff announced they have started issuing refunds for the canceled 2024 pre-registrations.
- They confirmed that there will be no A-Kon event in 2025.
- There’s hope for a 2026 event, though 2027 is considered a more realistic target.
- The team remains committed to improving its financial situation and bringing the convention back to its roots.
Why the Delay?
In February 2024, the organizers explained that COVID-19 caused significant disruptions, compounded by A-Kon's own challenges. Some key issues include:
- The establishment of a Board of Investors during the pandemic to keep the event afloat.
- Funding delays impacting operations.
- Pending subsidies from the state of Texas that are yet to arrive.
Until the crucial funding is secured, the team cannot honor agreements with venues, sign talent, or plan future events.
A History of Delays
Like many conventions, A-Kon faced cancellations and delays due to the pandemic:
- The 2020 event was canceled due to COVID-19.
- Plans for 2021 were postponed to 2022.
- The convention was held at the Irving Convention Center at Las Colinas from June 3-5, 2022.
- Another event took place there June 2-4, 2023.
