Amazon Prime Video announced on Friday that it will stream the highly anticipated television anime Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX (pronounced as "g-kwux") worldwide in over 240 countries. The anime will begin streaming in Japan on April 9 at 1:00 a.m. JST.

It will also premiere on 30 Nippon TV affiliate channels on April 8 at 24:29 JST (effectively April 9 at 12:29 a.m.).

Story Overview

The anime follows Amate Yuzuriha, a high-school student living peacefully in a space colony. Her life changes when she meets Nyaan, a war refugee, who introduces her to the illegal mobile suit dueling sport known as Clan Battle. Piloting the GQuuuuuuX under the entry name "Machu," Amate faces fierce battles daily. Things take a dramatic turn when an unidentified Gundam mobile suit appears, pursued by both the space force and police. Its pilot, a boy named Shūji, becomes a key figure in the unfolding events.

Box Office Success of the Film

The franchise's anime film, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning-, opened in Japan on January 17. The film is a re-edited version of the television anime's first four episodes and achieved remarkable success:

Opening Weekend: Debuted at #1 at the Japanese box office, selling 352,500 tickets and earning 598,832,300 yen (approximately US$3.83 million) in its first three days.
Cumulative Earnings: The film has sold 1.80 million tickets, earning a total of 2,965,965,500 yen (around US$19.92 million).

Franchise Milestones

The film has surpassed the all-time Japanese earnings of the 1982 Mobile Suit Gundam III: Encounters in Space anime film, which earned 2.3 billion yen (about US$14.88 million in current conversion). This achievement makes Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning- the second highest-earning film in the Gundam franchise in Japan.

Top-Earning Gundam Films:

Mobile Suit Gundam Seed FREEDOM: ¥4.79 billion (US$31.05 million) as of its initial run's final weekend in May 2024. Including its special edition screenings later in 2024, the film earned a cumulative total of ¥5.38 billion (US$35.5 million).
Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning-: ¥2.96 billion (US$19.92 million).

Special Screenings and Additions

MX4D and 4DX Screenings: The film added immersive screenings.
Special Footage: On February 22, "special footage" teasing the story beyond the film was introduced.
