About Goodbye, Lara
The anime tells a poetic story inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid. It follows a mermaid who makes a forbidden wish to be loved by a human. After her death, she is reborn 200 years later in modern-day Japan, specifically in the Lake Biwa area, where she must navigate life in a human world.
Notably, Lake Biwa is located in Shiga prefecture—also the hometown of director Takushi Koide.
