Gundam Film Adaptation in the Works
Jim Mickle, known for his work on Sweet Tooth, is stepping into the spotlight as the writer and director of the highly anticipated Gundam film. He is also teaming up with Linda Moran to produce the project through their production company, Nightshade. The excitement surrounding the film began to build after a joint investment agreement was signed between Bandai Namco Filmworks and Legendary Pictures back in January.
Key Announcements at Anime Expo
The film's adaptation was officially announced at Anime Expo in July 2018. Mitsuaki Taguchi, the president and representative director of Bandai Namco Holdings, joined the panel alongside Robert Napton of Legendary Comics, who moderated the discussion concerning the live-action project.
Building Connections
At a later event, Project Anime in March 2019, Napton shared insights on how past collaborations paved the way for this film. He mentioned that a cameo of Gundam Unicorn in Pacific Rim: Uprising was pivotal in fostering relationships between Sunrise and Legendary Pictures.
Ken Iyadomi, an executive from Sunrise, noted some challenges in getting the right contacts for the deal but added that negotiations were smoother than expected, particularly with the ease of convincing Sunrise's CEO. He also remarked on how a leaner team at Legendary allowed for quicker decision-making.
Upcoming Projects
In April 2018, during the Gundam Franchise's New Work Unveiling event, a project tentatively titled Mobile Suit Gundam UC2 (Kidō Senshi Gundam UC2) was mentioned, which was set to be presented in an "overseas drama" format. This project takes place in Universal Calendar 0104 and is slated for a 2022 launch. After revealing this, the emcee and guest, Gundam Unicorn novelist Harutoshi Fukui, humorously advised the audience to "pretend you didn't see that" regarding the visual displayed.
