Group Disbands Amid Controversy
The official website of the rock band TOKIO announced that the group has decided to disband as of Wednesday. This decision comes after it was revealed that Taichi Kokubun, one of its members, had committed multiple compliance violations in the past.
The band members issued a sincere apology to all parties affected by Kokubun's actions. After confirming each other's intentions, they concluded that continuing as a group would be difficult, especially in regaining public trust and support.
Details of the Violations
On June 20, the group's official website announced that Kokubun had been suspended indefinitely following the discovery of his compliance breaches. He was also encouraged to reflect deeply on his actions.
Kokubun himself issued an apology, acknowledging that his immaturity, complacency, and lack of awareness contributed to the issues. He expressed regret for the inconvenience caused.
Industry Reactions and Consequences
Nippon TV President Hiroyuki Fukuda held a press conference on June 20, where he confirmed Kokubun's past violations. He also announced that Kokubun would leave the popular TV show Tetsuwan Dash, where the group frequently appeared.
Following the disbandment announcement, Nippon TV stated that Tetsuwan Dash will continue airing. They also expressed hope that Shigeru Joshima and Masahiro Matsuoka, two former members, will continue to appear on the show.
Past Controversies
In 2018, former bassist and singer Tatsuya Yamaguchi left TOKIO after being accused of indecent assault on a high school girl. He subsequently terminated his contract with Johnny & Associates (now Starto Entertainment).
