Exciting News: The Criterion Collection Expands into Anime!
The Criterion Collection has announced a fantastic update for anime fans. Starting in August, their streaming service, the Criterion Channel, will feature a dedicated anime section!
What's Coming?
The new lineup will include some iconic titles:
- Ghost in the Shell
- Redline
- Paprika
- Tamala 2010: A Punk Cat in Space
Already available on the platform are beloved works like Liz and the Blue Bird by Naoko Yamada and five films by Makoto Shinkai, including:
- 5 Centimeters Per Second
- Children Who Chase Lost Voices
- The Place Promised in Our Early Days
- She and Her Cat
- Voices of a Distant Star
A Rich History in Animation
The Criterion Collection has a notable history with anime. In 1992, they released Katsuhiro Otomo's Akira on LaserDisc, marking a significant milestone. After a two-decade hiatus, they returned to animated films with a Blu-ray set of the Godzilla Showa-era films (1954–1975) in 2019, featuring 15 classic movies.
They've also released collector's sets like Lady Snowblood and films by legendary director Akira Kurosawa, such as Throne of Blood.
