Detective Conan: One-eyed Flashback Breaks Franchise Records on Opening Day

Japanese entertainment news site Cinema Today reported on Saturday that Meitantei Conan: Sekigan no Flashback (Detective Conan: One-eyed Flashback), the 28th film in the Detective Conan (Case Closed) franchise, earned an impressive 1.05 billion yen (approximately US$7.4 million) with 690,000 tickets sold on its first day.
Breaking Previous Records
This opening day surpasses the performance of the previous film, Case Closed: The Million-dollar Pentagram, which earned 960 million yen (about US$6.26 million) on its opening day last April. That film also set franchise milestones:
- Ranked #1 in its opening weekend
- Sold over 2.27 million tickets
- Earned roughly 3.35 billion yen (US$21.7 million) in its first three days
- Became the highest-grossing film in the series, surpassing 2023's Detective Conan: Kurogane no Submarine which earned 13.83 billion yen (around US$88.23 million)
- Was the highest-grossing film in Japan in 2024
About the New Film
Detective Conan: One-eyed Flashback premiered in Japan on Friday with screenings available in IMAX, MX4D, 4DX, and Dolby Cinema formats, in addition to regular showings. It screened in 522 theaters, setting a new franchise record.
The theme song, "Twilight!!!," is performed by the Japanese band King Gnu.
Set against the snowy mountains of Nagano Prefecture, the film features memorable characters:
- Yamato, a Nagano inspector with an injured left eye
- Kogoro, a key character returning since his last major film role in 2005's Detective Conan: Strategy Above the Depths
- Taka'aki and Yui, also from Nagano, make appearances
