Woo-shik Choi in Talks to Star in Live-Action Adaptation of Whale Star: The Gyeongseong Mermaid

Exciting news from the Korean entertainment world! Actor Woo-shik Choi, known for his role in the Oscar-winning film Parasite, is currently in discussions to lead the upcoming live-action adaptation of the popular webtoon Whale Star: The Gyeongseong Mermaid.

About the Webtoon

Whale Star is a celebrated series that won the 2021 Korea Content Grand Prize Presidential Award. The story is set in 1926, during Korea's colonial period under Japanese rule, and offers a fresh take on the classic fairy tale The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen.

Plot Summary

The story follows Su-a Heo, a dedicated handmaiden who spends her days working and swimming in the sea. Her life changes when she discovers a wounded independence fighter, Uihyeon Kang, washed ashore. She nurses him back to health, but their connection leads to tragedy when she loses her ability to speak after a botched murder attempt by Uihyeon's comrade, Haesu Song.

As she journeys to the capital, Gyeongseong (modern-day Seoul), seeking revenge, Su-a finds herself drawn into a strange new world and its people.

Casting and Production

According to industry sources, Whale Star has finalized its cast lineup and is in the final stages of casting and pre-production. Woo-shik Choi has been offered the role of Uihyeon Kang and is reportedly reviewing the script positively.

Fans will have to wait a bit longer, as no official broadcast date has been announced.

Whale Star: The Gyeongseong Mermaid was created by Yoonhee Na and was serialized from 2019 to 2021 in Korea, with an English version available from 2022 to 2023.
