Celebrating 20 Years of Sugar Sugar Rune: New Anime Short and More!
Studio Khara marks a special milestone with a nostalgic tribute to the beloved manga Sugar Sugar Rune. To celebrate its 20th anniversary, they unveiled a new anime short titled Sugar Sugar Rune: Les deux sorcières during Japan Expo on Friday.
A Glimpse into the New Short
The short serves as a prologue to the original manga and was introduced by Yusuke Matsui, a talented CG animator and director known for his work on Evangelion: 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon A Time. Alongside him was Kohei Fujiwara, a producer from Studio Khara.

Excitingly, Matsui also announced that production has begun on a full-length anime project using similar CG animation techniques. Fans can look forward to more adventures in this unique visual style.
About Sugar Sugar Rune
Sugar Sugar Rune was serialized in Kodansha's Nakayoshi magazine from 2004 to 2007. The story follows two best friends and rival witches, Vanilla Mieux and Chocolat Meilleure, who are competing to become the next queen of the Magical World.
Plot Highlights
- The future queen is chosen by sending two young witches to the Human World.
- They compete to win the hearts of boys, with the one collecting the most by the end crowned queen.
- The main characters are guided by their mentor, Rockin' Robin, and accompanied by their animal familiars, Blanca the mouse and Duke the frog.
