The Story
Published by J-Novel Club, the light novel series tells the story of Maomao, a girl with a sharp mind and extensive medical knowledge, who is kidnapped and sold into the palace's rear complex, the hougong. There, she becomes a lady-in-waiting to the Emperor's favorite consort, tasked with tasting food for poison.

The series began serialization on Shōsetsuka ni Narō in October 2011, with the novels later published in print by Shufunotomo in August 2014, featuring illustrations by Shino. A manga adaptation by Nekokurage has been ongoing since May 2017, published in Square Enix's Monthly Big Gangan magazine, with English releases by Square Enix Manga & Books.
