The April issue of Kadokawa's Monthly Comic Alive magazine has unveiled the final chapter of 86: Mahō Shōjo Regina Lena ~Tatakae! Ginga Kōkō Senkan San Magnolia. This magical girl spinoff, created by Suzume Somemiya, is based on Asato Asato's acclaimed light novel series, 86. The last chapter was published on February 27, and fans can look forward to the second compiled volume, set to ship on March 28.
A Galactic War of Magical Girls
Set in a captivating space environment, the series depicts a galactic war fought by magical girls. This unique premise has attracted a dedicated following since its launch.
Somemiya first introduced the series in March 2023 in Monthly Comic Alive. The first volume is scheduled for release on March 28, 2024.
Previous Works by Somemiya
Before this spinoff, Somemiya illustrated 86: Operation High School, which reimagined the original military drama as a school comedy featuring Lena and Shin as typical high school students. This manga debuted in June 2020 under the tentative title Gakuen 86 and concluded in August 2021, with two compiled volumes published by Kadokawa.
The Light Novel Series
Asato launched the original light novel series in April 2017 under Kadokawa's Dengeki Bunko imprint. The illustrations are crafted by Shirabi, known for works like The Ryuo's Work Is Never Done! and Myriad Colors Phantom World. The mechanical design is handled by I-IV, recognized for contributions to Aldnoah.Zero and Re:CREATORS. The light novel series also has a manga adaptation illustrated by Motoki Yoshihara, published in Square Enix's Young Gangan magazine. Additionally, Yen Press is set to release the manga in English.
Anime Adaptation
The novels inspired a television anime adaptation that premiered in April 2021. The series aired for two cours, with the second half debuting in October 2021. Crunchyroll streamed the anime as it aired in Japan, including an English dub.
