About the Novel
'Kunoichi Ninpōchō' centers on five female ninjas, each carrying a child of Toyotomi Hideyori. Under the orders of Sanada Yukimura, a vassal of the Toyotomi clan, they use their ninja skills to escape the Siege of Osaka and evade Tokugawa Ieyasu's wrath.
This novel is part of Yamada's Ninpōchō series, which has inspired various adaptations including films, anime, and manga. Notably, 'Kunoichi Ninpōchō' inspired a live-action film directed by Sadao Nakajima in 1964.
Yamada's Legacy in Manga and Anime
- The late Futaroh Yamada's classic 'Makai Tenshō' novel, serialized as 'Oboro Ninpōchō' in Osaka Shimbun (1964-1965), served as the basis for the 1998 OVA 'Ninja Resurrection'.
- Masaki Segawa launched the manga 'Jū
Ninpō Makai Tenshō' in Kodansha's Young Magazine in 2012, which concluded in 2018. - The manga 'Basilisk', also based on Yamada's 1959 novel 'Kōga Ninpōchō' (The Kouga Ninja Scrolls), inspired a TV anime in 2005 and a live-action film 'SHINOBI - Heart Under Blade'.
- The franchise received a new anime and manga titled 'Basilisk: The Ouka Ninja Scrolls' in 2018, based on Yamada's sequel novels, with the anime streaming on Crunchyroll and Funimation.
Final Thoughts
Fans of ninja stories and historical fiction can look forward to Mizushima's adaptation, which promises to bring a fresh perspective to Yamada's beloved series. Keep an eye out for the release on August 27!
