Recent Developments in the Franchise
The latest GeGeGe no Kitarō anime, the sixth television incarnation, premiered in April 2018, taking over the timeslot previously held by Dragon Ball Super. The show concluded its run in March 2020 after 97 episodes.
The film Kitarō Tanjō: Gegege no Nazo (The Birth of Kitaro: The Mystery of GeGeGe) opened in Japan in November 2023, selling 111,500 tickets and grossing approximately 160 million yen (about $1.07 million) in its first three days.
Additionally, the recut version of the film, Kitarō Tanjō: Gegege no Nazo Shinsei-ban (True Birth Version), premiered in theaters on October 4, with a new R15+ rating.
Mizuki's manga, which began in 1959 as Hakaba Kitarō, has inspired seven television series, several animated movies, and two live-action films, focusing on an inhuman boy navigating the human and supernatural worlds.
