GKIDS to Release COLORFUL STAGE! The Movie: A Miku Who Can't Sing
English-Subbed Trailer Streaming Now
GKIDS announced on Thursday that it has acquired the North American theatrical rights to COLORFUL STAGE! The Movie: A Miku Who Can't Sing (Gekijо̄ban Project Sekai: Kowareta Sekai to Utaenai Miku), the anime film based on the popular Project Sekai: Colorful Stage feat. Hatsune Miku smartphone game. The movie will hit theaters on April 11. To get fans excited, GKIDS has also streamed an English-subtitled trailer:

This partnership marks the first collaboration between GKIDS and CyberAgent, who negotiated the deal.

The film debuted in Japan on January 17, opening at #2. It sold 232,500 tickets and grossed approximately 306,817,000 yen (around $1.96 million) in its first three days, accumulating a total of 870,389,000 yen (about $5.64 million) by Sunday.
The production involved Colorful Palette, a subsidiary of Craft Egg, in collaboration with Sega, and is set for a global release.
Plot Overview
The story follows Ichika Hoshino, who stumbles upon a Hatsune Miku song she's never heard before at a CD shop. Captivated, she calls out to Miku, who mysteriously disappears. Later, Miku appears on Ichika's smartphone, expressing her wish to reach more people with her music, despite her songs failing to connect. After witnessing Ichika connect with others through a live street performance, Miku seeks her help.

- Saki Fujita reprises her role as Hatsune Miku.
- Ruriko Noguchi plays Ichika Hoshino.
- Returning cast members from the franchise also join the film.
Directed by Hiroyuki Hata (Lapis Re:LiGHTs) at P.A. Works, the screenplay is written by Yoko Yonaiyama (Ya Boy Kongming!). Yuki Akiyama (IRODUKU: The World in Colors) designed the characters, supported by Masatoshi Tsuji as a sub-character designer, while Satoshi Hōno (Aggretsuko) composed the music.
Background on the Franchise
The Project Sekai: Colorful Stage feat. Hatsune Miku smartphone game launched in Japan in September 2020. This collaboration between Sega, Crypton Future Media, and Colorful Palette was released globally as Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage! on iOS and Android devices in December 2021.
The game has also inspired a mini anime titled Petit Seka, which consisted of 10 episodes available for free on YouTube.
