Exciting News for Film Lovers: LOVE & POP Hits North American Theaters!
GKIDS has some thrilling news for fans of Japanese cinema! On Monday, they announced via Bluesky that Hideaki Anno's 1998 live-action film LOVE & POP will be making its way to North American theaters starting February 21.
The film will kick off its screenings at the IFC Center in New York City on the 21st, followed by a showing at the American Cinematheque's Los Feliz Theatre in Los Angeles on February 23. Stay tuned, as more cities are set to be announced soon!
Earlier this month, the Japan Society hosted a screening of the film on February 1. Based on Ryū Murakami's 1996 novel Love and Pop: Topaz II, this film marks Anno's first venture into feature-length live-action filmmaking. It came after his groundbreaking work on the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion and before his later projects like Shin Godzilla and Shin Kamen Rider.
For those who can't wait to see it on the big screen, Kino Video released a DVD version with English subtitles back in 2004, making it accessible for a wider audience.
Mark your calendars and get ready to experience this unique film in theaters!
