Matthew Modine Joins the Cast of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire Sequel
Entertainment news outlet Deadline reported on Wednesday that acclaimed actor Matthew Modine—known for his roles in Oppenheimer, Stranger Things, and Hard Miles—is set to join the cast of the upcoming sequel to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. This film is part of the Monsterverse franchise created by Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment.
New Additions to the Cast
In addition to Modine, the film will feature:
- Kaitlyn Dever (Dopesick, Booksmart, and the upcoming second season of The Last of Us)
- Jack O'Connell (Unbroken, Ferrari), who will portray Dever's character's brother.
- Delroy Lindo (Get Shorty, Gone in 60 Seconds, and the upcoming film Sinners), who will play the boss of Dever's character.
Returning to the franchise is Dan Stevens, reprising his role as the monster veterinarian Trapper from Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
Direction and Release
The sequel will be directed by Grant Sputore, known for his work on I Am Mother.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire opened in the United States in March 2024, earning $80 million in its opening weekend and topping the box office. The film later debuted in Japan, where it secured the #2 spot, selling 306,000 tickets and grossing approximately $2.97 million in its first four days.
Box Office Success
The film has become the highest-grossing entry in the Monsterverse series, amassing $570 million worldwide, surpassing the previous record held by Kong: Skull Island, which earned $568.8 million. Its domestic earnings stand at $196.3 million, while international earnings reach $373.7 million. The film has achieved the highest grossing title in 35 markets, including Brazil, Colombia, France, India, Indonesia, Mexico, and the UAE.
