Naver Webtoon's AI Service 'Character Chat' Surpasses 100 Million Messages
Naver Webtoon’s AI-powered service ‘Character Chat’ has hit a major milestone, exchanging over 100 million messages just one year after its launch. This innovative feature allows users to have real-time conversations with their favorite Webtoon characters and has become especially popular among teens and young adults.
What is Character Chat?
Launched in June 2024 as an experimental feature within the Naver Webtoon app, Character Chat uses advanced natural language processing to mimic each character’s personality, tone, and in-universe knowledge. Initially available with four characters, the service now includes 12, with ongoing updates that add roleplay modes, relationship-based responses, and gamified elements.
Growing Popularity and User Engagement
As of June 2025, approximately 3.5 million users have engaged with Character Chat. The platform’s monetization model offers a limited number of free messages, after which users can opt for paid messages. In May 2025, paid interactions accounted for 41% of all messages, with the average user spending doubling since the service’s launch.
Demographics and Future Plans
The service is especially popular among younger audiences, with 76% of users in their teens and twenties. Teenagers alone make up nearly half of the user base, at 47.6%.
Hyo-jung Kim, Chief Product Officer at Naver Webtoon, shared their vision: "Our goal is for Character Chat to lead the next wave of digital products on the Webtoon platform. We’re exploring voice and visual AI technologies and considering global expansion."
Currently, Character Chat is not available in the United States.
Other AI Integrations
Naver Webtoon continues to innovate by integrating AI into its IP portfolio. Earlier this month, they launched Tarotoon, a web-based service offering AI-generated fortune readings from popular Webtoon characters. The platform also features AI Caricature, transforming user photos into Webtoon-style illustrations.
