Pocket Comics to Cease Operations in English and French Markets
Pocket Comics, a global webtoon platform operated by NHN, has announced the termination of its English and French services, along with the Korean Comico platform, effective October 31, 2025. The company cited "business reasons" for this decision.
Service Details:
- Coin Purchases: Available until July 15, 2025.
- Coin Usage: Permitted until October 31, 2025.
- Publication and Ad Tickets: Accessible until July 15, 2025.
- Access to Purchased Episodes and Offerwall: Available until October 31, 2025.
This move follows a report by Maeil Economy on June 8, 2025, indicating that NHN was considering shutting down the French service and conducting a comprehensive review of its operations. The closure of the French service marks NHN's complete exit from the European webtoon market, following prior withdrawals from Germany and Southeast Asia.
Background:
- English Launch: Pocket Comics debuted in the United States, Canada, and Singapore in July 2020, offering 41 titles, including both Japanese manga and Korean webtoons.
- French Launch: The platform expanded to France in January 2022, initially achieving success by targeting women in their 20s and 30s. However, this momentum has since declined, with local readers continuing to favor traditional print manga.
As of now, the Japanese Comico platform has not announced any plans to cease operations.
