In Memoriam: Nobumasa Konagai, Pioneer of Manga Publishing
Nobumasa Konagai, a key figure in the Japanese manga industry and founding member of Hakusensha, passed away at the age of 94 on February 2. His funeral was held privately, attended by close relatives.

A Legacy in Manga
Born in 1930 in Shizuoka prefecture, Konagai began his career at Shueisha before co-founding Hakusensha in 1973. During his tenure, he made significant contributions to the shōjo manga scene, notably serving as editor-in-chief for the magazine Bessatsu Margaret.
Highlights of His Career:
- Launched Bessatsu Margaret and other notable magazines including:
- Hana to Yume
- LaLa
- Young Animal
- MOE
- Held the position of president at Hakusensha from 1990 until his retirement in 2004.
- Founded a Manga School aimed at nurturing young talent in the industry.
In recognition of his contributions, the Agency for Cultural Affairs awarded Konagai with the Japan Media Arts Festival Achievement Award in 2012.
