Originally published in 2001, Shinji Ishii's novel follows Giuseppe, a man known in town as the “Obsessed Man” because he fixates on different things for short periods—losing sight of everything else.
His life changes when he encounters Pechka, a balloon seller, and instantly falls in love. But Pechka's deep sadness keeps her distant. With the help of his mouse friend Cielo, Giuseppe draws on his past obsessions to try to bring happiness to Pechka.
