About the Film
Totto-Chan is based on the memoir of Tetsuko Kuroyanagi, who recounts her experiences at Tomoe Gakuen, a school where she found acceptance after struggling at her original elementary school. Set against the backdrop of Japan's descent into war, the story highlights her encounters with unique classmates and the lessons she learns.
Originally published in Japan in 1981, Kuroyanagi's memoir quickly became a bestseller and was required reading for elementary students in the 1980s. It has since been translated into English and many other languages.
