What is Yona of the Dawn About?
Viz Media describes the manga as:
A red-haired princess loses her family and her kingdom… Now she must rise and fight for her throne!
Princess Yona lives a happy life as the only heir to her kingdom, loved by her father, the king, and protected by her loyal guard Hak. She also cherishes her relationship with her beloved, Su-won. But everything changes on her 16th birthday when tragedy strikes.
Yona witnesses her loved ones' murder and must flee her palace to survive. With Hak by her side, she faces the challenge of evading enemies and finding her new path. Where will her journey lead?
About the Creator
Mizuho Kusanagi, the talented mind behind Yona of the Dawn, launched the manga in 2009 in Hakusensha's Hana to Yume. Kusanagi is also known for works like Mugen Spiral, Game X Rush, and NG Life. The manga has been well-received, with the 46th volume shipped in June, and the 44th volume released by Viz Media earlier this year.
In June 2024, Kusanagi confirmed that the manga is in its final arc, marking the conclusion of this beloved series.
Adaptations and Stage Plays
Yona of the Dawn has inspired a 24-episode anime series that aired in 2014, along with several DVD releases in 2015 and 2016. The anime was released on home video by Funimation.
The story has also been adapted into stage plays:
- The first stage play ran in March 2016.
- A second stage play was held in November 2018.
- A third stage play took place in November 2019.
- Most recently, a musical stage play was performed in Tokyo in July 2024.
